What is the difference between U.P.V.C. and P.V.C. ?
U.P.V.C. stands for Unplasticized Poly Vinyl Chloride, meaning it has no plasticizers added, making the extrusion more rigid and consequently more easily broken under stress. P.V.C has plasticizers added, giving greater flexibility without compromising the strength of the extrusion.

Should I have my windows installed inside my old frames or have the old frames replaced?
Most existing wood window frames have very little or no insulation between them and the frame of the house. Having high performance windows installed on such frames is really only doing half the job, as cold air will still penetrate your home around the wood frame. You will lose a significant amount of glass area by having a new U.P.V.C. window installed on an existing wood frame.
What is the difference between Planning and Building Regulations.
Planning drawings of your extension will include plans and elevations as existing and proposed. The Planning Officers will be checking to ensure that your development fits in with the street scene and does not adversly affect any neighbouring properties. Building Regulation drawings are more detailed and include sections and details to show that the development will be built to the correct standards.
Do I need approval to build a porch or conservatory
Most porches and conservatories are exempt from Building Regulation approval if they meet the following basic criteria:
Separated from the dwelling by walls, doors and/or windows
Built at ground level
Under 30m² in floor area
Glazing complies with the safety glazing requirements of the Building Regulations [Part N]
Have independent controls for any heating
Please note :
A conservatory requires a glazed or translucent roof to satisfy this exemption.
You may need Building regulation approval for any electrical installations within these exempt structures if Part P (electrical installations in domestic buildings) is applicable.
It is advisable to ensure that a
conservatory is not constructed, so that it restricts ladder access to windows serving a room in the roof space or a loft conversion, particularly if that window is needed as an emergency means of escape in the case of fire.
What time are builders allowed to start and can they work weekends.
There is no set legal time for builders to start noisy work, but it is generally accepted that the most common working hours are: 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday 7.30am to 1.30pm, Saturday At no time on Sunday or any public or bank holiday IF the work is going to cause disturbance to the neighbours due to excessive noise. Builders may still work outside these hours if they are doing quiet work that is not causing disturbance.
